Biography
Suman C. Tharan has always been interested in performing arts from a very young age. Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 3rd, 1967, his first appearance on television was in Singapore when he was 10. He went on to do a couple of stage roles, The Artful Dodger in Lionel Bart's “Oliver” (1984) and Malcolm in Tom Stoppard’s “Cahoot’s Macbeth” (1985). Suman also was commissioned by Education Radio Malaysia to do a series of programs in 1987. Upon returning from England after studying Law and working extensively, front of house in London’s West End on Les Miserables, Aspects of Love, and Cats, he moved to the bustling Bangkok. There, he acted in Mark O’Donnell’s “Marred Bliss” (2003) as Dink and directed Christopher Durang’s “Hardy Boys and the Mystery of where Babies Come From” (2004). Out of sheer luck, he was cast as a featured extra in Dennis Gansel’s “The Mechanic Ressurection” (2016) with Jason Statham and has a small featured extra role with Blake Lively and Yvonne Strahovski in “All I See Is You” (2016). This brought Suman a variety of roles in smaller independent films and a six episode arc on Thailand Channel 9 “Turakit ASEAN”. He hopes to accomplish another three Hollywood movies, a lead in a U.S. TV sitcom and break into Bollywood movies by the end of 2015, all the while, without leaving his home away from home,Bangkok, Thailand.
Early life
5Suman is the eldest son to retired Maj. Sri Tharan and Eeswary Somasundaram. Soon after his brother Navin and sister Iyla were born, in 1971, his dad was transferred from Kuala Lumpur, West Malaysia to Kuching, East Malaysia. Here Suman attended school and grew up in a very British atmosphere, both at home and at school. In 1976, his dad was once again transferred, as most military personnel do, back to West Malaysian, this time to the southern most city of Johor Bahru. As West Malaysia was more nationalistic and had changed their official language to Malay, Suman found the next few school years, especially trying. He was then pushed to Singapore, where he completed his secondary and junior college. In 1987, he went to London and began studying law not to return until 1993. After being in the West for sometime, he found it hard to readjust being back in Malaysia and needed to feel like an expatriate again, thus moving to Bangkok, Thailand some 25 years ago. He currently resides in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
